On Lies, Secrets and Silence
Frida Orupabo explores historical representations of Black bodies through collage, reassembling female figures to reveal tensions tied to identity, memory, and the gaze. In On Lies, Secrets, and Silence, she draws us into the domestic sphere, a space of both intimacy and control. Drawing from colonial archives, vernacular photography, and online images, she creates constellations of gazes in which viewers find themselves both observing and being observed. She questions the power structures shaping visibility throughout history and composes an iconography in which her subjects reclaim political, aesthetic, and erotic subjectivity.
