An Incomplete Calendar
In her multimedia installation, Sanaz Sohrabi observes how representations of oil evolved after the departure of Western oil companies from colonized countries in the Middle East and North Africa. By examining archival material, she traces the emergence of a visual culture of oil shaped by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), which sought to distance itself from colonial and imperialist powers. She therefore highlights the ambiguity that characterized efforts to portray and communicate this new identity. The exhibition bears witness to OPEC’s influence on transnational political movements from the 1960s to the 1980s, drawing a complex geopolitical portrait.
