swell of spæc(i)es

Sep 10, 2025Jan 11, 2026

In swell of spæc(i)es, Josèfa Ntjam explores the political and utopian dimensions of oceans, which she conceives as liquid forms of the world. In this immersive installation, organic sculptures, video, music, and text intertwine to forge a contemporary creation myth centred around plankton, envisioned as a link between ocean and cosmos, biology and mythology. Inspired by Dogon cosmology, the film at the heart of the exhibition revisits the story of Amma, the deity who created the stars, and the Nommo, the first aquatic creatures. Ntjam thus shapes a fluid imaginary in which borders between species and temporalities dissolve.
